Clear, practical guides for writing, compiling, and sharing LaTeX and Typst projects.

Use the writing tools

Symbols, formula recognition, live math preview, pasted tables and images, formatting, spell check, and outline navigation.

This guide is written for

Insert symbols and formulas

The sidebar carries the parts of LaTeX nobody memorizes, so you rarely have to leave the editor to look one up.

How to do it

  1. Open the Math Symbols section, search by name or browse a category, and select a symbol to insert it at the cursor.
  2. Use the image button in the Math Symbols heading to drop, upload, or paste one formula screenshot.
  3. Review and edit the recognized LaTeX and its rendered preview, choose an insertion format, then insert it at the cursor.
  4. Images are sent to the configured AI model for recognition. JointTex saves compressed screenshots and results in your per-project history (latest 50); you can delete entries individually.

See math and structure while you type

Two panels answer the questions that otherwise cost a compile: what does this formula look like, and where am I.

How to do it

  1. Keep the live math preview open to see a formula rendered as you type it.
  2. Expect an unusual glyph to load its font the first time it is needed, so the preview needs a connection.
  3. Use the Outline section to move between the sections of the open .tex file.
  4. Click into the PDF pane and the Outline shows the compiled PDF's structure instead, so you can navigate the document as a reader sees it.
  5. Right-click inside a formula and use Copy As to copy it as LaTeX, MathML, an equation for Microsoft Word, or an Image.
  6. Under Math Preview in the editor settings, choose Inline, Floating, or No preview.

Paste tables and images

Pasting into a .tex or Markdown file turns a copied table into source for that table, and stores a copied image in the project and includes it.

How to do it

  1. Copy a table from a spreadsheet, a document or a web page and paste it: it arrives as a table, with bold, italic, merged columns and the caption kept. A table of up to 200 rows by 50 columns is converted.
  2. Where you paste decides the shape: inside a tabular only the rows are inserted, inside a table float a bare tabular, and anywhere else a whole table float with the cursor in its caption.
  3. The notice after a table tells you how to get the plain text instead: undo, then paste without formatting.
  4. Paste a screenshot or a copied image and it is saved as pasted-<date>-<time>.png (a JPEG keeps its type) in the first of figures, images, figs, fig, img or assets that exists beside the root file, or in a new figures folder, and included at the cursor.
  5. Inside a figure only \includegraphics is inserted; elsewhere you get a whole figure, and in Markdown an image link. A paste never overwrites an existing file.
  6. Select some text and paste a web address: the text becomes a link to it, \href in LaTeX, #link in Typst and [text](address) in Markdown. Only plain words are linked, not math, code, comments or text with markup in it; pasting without formatting pastes the address itself.

pastes the clipboard as plain text, which is never converted.

Format, structure and count

The toolbar above the editor, Format Document and the word count take care of the routine parts of a LaTeX source.

How to do it

  1. Use the toolbar below a .tex tab for the heading level, Bold, Italic, Insert link, Insert cross-reference, Insert footnote, lists, Insert figure, and Insert table at the size you pick.
  2. {mod+b}, {mod+i} and {mod+u} make the selection Bold, Italic or Underline, as in Word; pressed again on formatted text they take the formatting away, and with nothing selected they insert an empty command with the cursor inside. They work the same in Typst and Markdown files, but Markdown has no underline.
  3. Right-click the toolbar and choose Hide text toolbar to remove it; Text toolbar in the editor settings brings it back.
  4. Run Format Document to re-indent and wrap a .tex file by the project's Formatting settings, which are shared so the file formats the same for every collaborator.
  5. Press Enter in a list to continue it, and run LaTeX: wrap selection in environment or LaTeX: close current environment from the command palette.
  6. Click the word count in the status bar, or run Show word count, for Body text, Headings, Captions and footnotes, and a By file breakdown; math, comments, the preamble and citation keys are left out.
  7. The same panel counts Figures, Tables and Display equations: open one of them to list each item, and point at an item to preview it.

formats the document; closes the current environment.

Catch mistakes as you write

Spell check and completions work against the actual project, so they know your labels, your citation keys, and your terms.

How to do it

  1. Spell check underlines unknown words in an English document; a quick fix adds a word to the project dictionary, which is shared with everyone in the project.
  2. As you type, completions offer commands, environments, packages, labels, and citation keys.
  3. Hover a reference, macro, included image, or package name to preview it without opening another file.
  4. Go to a definition to jump to a label, macro, citation key, or a package's documentation PDF.
  5. Turn on Grammar check under Language & assistance in the editor settings to also flag English grammar and style; it runs in your browser, and a quick fix can ignore a phrase once, in this project or in all your projects, or turn the rule off.
  6. Choose Subject dictionaries in the same place so spell check knows your field's terms; the selection is shared with collaborators.
